The word Bardhaman symbolizes the grwoth and prosperity. The remnant of Sati’s body and many other temples and shivlings have made it a holy place, on the other hand, the Curzon gate reveals the historic importance of the place. University of Bardhaman or Burdwan University is conveniently located in the city of Bardhaman at a distance of approximately 100 km from Kolkata. It is located on the Grand Trunk road, which has got prime importance from both historic and business point of view.

Bardhaman University started on June 15, 1960 with courses in humanities and the first vice chancellor had been Sukumar Sen, an ICS.

Slowly it has responded to the need of the hour by incorporating various courses on science and technology to feed the continuous growing demands of industrialization.

The university have got more than 100 colleges spread over various districts like Hooghly, Bardhaman, Bankura, Birbhum, Purulia, which includes engineering, medical and even management colleges.

Bradhaman University has got museum, art gallery, science center, planetarium, rural technology center, academic staff college.

Bradhaman University is offering various courses like B.Ed and started vocational courses also.

Perhaps the most significant development is the university has been offering distance education in various post graduate courses.
