Rabindra Bharati University has been founded on May 08, 1962, to mark the birth centenary of the noble laureate Rabindanath Tagore in his ancestral residence, Jorasanko Thakurbari by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, prime minister of India. The university offers several endowment prizes and distinctions.

One can study D. Litt (in all subjects), Ph.D. (in all subjects), M. Phil. (two-year course) in Bengali, English, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Political Science, Economics, History, Education and Human Development Studies and M.A. (two-year course) in Rabindra Bharati University. The university has become the first choice for the aspirants seeking their career in Fine Arts and visual Arts. Besides the traditional courses, the university also offers diploma courses on Rabindra Sangeet, Dance, drama, percussion etc and various adult and continuing education.

A museum was established on the same day of inauguration at Jorasanko Thakurbari to to perpetuate the memory of the great poet, gurudev Rabindranath Thakur. Anybody can get access to the museum by paying a nomial fees in the scheduled hours.
