Maulana Azad College (formerly known as Islamia College) was founded on 9th December 1926 by Lord Lytton, the then governor of Bengal, to promote Islamic learning and general education. It was made open to all in 1947 and the name of the college had been changed to Central Calcutta College. It was only 1960, when the college was named after the eminent scholar and national leader, Maulana Azad.
